The Structure Under My Life

I frequently speak with my clients about the “structure” that underlies life. Most often I am talking about Numerology charts, and how it is possible to decode some of the structures and intentions that we built in to our names and dates. At other times, I use the word during discussions about synchronicity, and how we can access structural information by allowing it into our awareness.
When I talk about the structure underlying life, I do not mean a tenuous fishnet made of birthdates and tarot cards. The structure of which I speak is tightly woven of many threads. It contains the very shape of our intentional life. It is supports and progresses us, whether or not we pay it any attention.
I have been reminded recently of the importance of Sacred Contracts. These are agreements we have made, with other immortal entities, to assist us in our Earthly life.

There is a poem that shows up periodically on my FaceBook feed:

“People come into your path for a reason, a season or a lifetime.
When you know which one it is, you will know what to do with that person.
When someone is in your life for a REASON it is usually to meet a need you have expressed.
They have come to assist you through a dificulty…
To provide you with guidance and support…
To aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually…
They may seem like they are a godsend, and they are.
They are there for the reason you need them to be.
Then without any wrongdoing on your part, or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do Something to bring the relationship to an end.

Sometimes they die…
Sometimes they walk away…
Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand….
What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled…
Their work is done.
The prayer you sent up has now been answered and now it is time to move on.
Some people come into your life for a SEASON.
Because your turn has come to share, grow or learn.
They bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh.
They may teach you something you have never done.
They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy.
Believe it, it is real. But only for a season.

LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons.
Things you must build upon to have a solid emotional foundation.
Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person, and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas of your life.
It is said that love is blind, but friendship is clairvoyant.
Thank you for being a part of my life…
Whether you were a reason, a season or a lifetime

This seems to me to be a wonderful explanation of how Sacred Contracts work.
We arrive into families and communities who have agreed to provide the conditions we need to complete our intended growth. These are the relationships that shape us for a lifetime.
My first family certainly created circumstances that massively impacted my lifetime in the world. My late partner changed who I am. The life I live now is unutterably altered because of that seventeen year season.
Once, when I was in my twenties, I was waiting in a downtown area for a bus. The woman next to me struck up a conversation. She was an elder from the Secwepemc Nation, which I knew only as Shuswap. She drew my attention to the multi-storey car-park across the street from us, and to the scrawny little trees that straggled out of cement planters on the ledges of each level. “Poor things” she said. “Trees don’t want to live like that. They will die with sadness.”
I had never before given any thought to trees having a natural, specific place in the world. The concept was new to me. With the arrogance of youth I silently labelled the woman a bit of a kook. Then the bus arrived.
Thirty or more years have gone by. I still remember those trees. I remember that they died, and I am sad for them. I am grateful everyday that the concept of the tree as a living thing was granted to me that day. I live among trees now. I live among people who work with trees and parks and conservation. Sometimes I go out and hug a tree and connect to the solid feeling of Life on Earth. I commune with the placid calm that is Tree Energy.
I know I had a Sacred Contract with that woman. She came to me for a reason. She had agreed to hold a single conversation that would affect how my life would unfold. She changed how I see, what I see, and how I tread on this precious planet.
