The Ongoing Shift

Before December 2012, there was lots of hype about the supposed end of the Mayan calendar. There were all sorts of tabloid writings and broadcasts about the end of the world as we know it; and plenty of opportunities for a few people to profit from the sales of books and retreats and coping skills that could be applied to the singular moment in history which had often been called The Shift.
Once the date had passed, the hype mostly disappeared and life went on. For those who continue to work with the concept of massive change, certainty that a Shift is happening has become greater rather than falling away.
Eckhart Tolle has written “There's a shift happening in humanity, a shift in consciousness, happening now because it has to happen now.”
Various teachers and writers have given differing names to this current era of spiritual awakening. Jim Malloy writes that it is referred to as "The Great Shift"; "The Global Awakening"; "The Quickening"; "The Shift of the Ages" and "The New Consciousness."
Prophesied throughout history and in many cultures, this Shift is a decades-long process more than it is an event on a particular Tuesday afternoon. This Shift is happening on multiple levels.
Societies are changing. Our communities are changing. Millions of individuals are educating themselves and Shifting how they interact with the world in every moment. As a result of these individuals, our communities change even more. As pockets of community evolution spread and merge they find a new way forward, and this results in societies changing in ever more profound ways. This is a self-sustaining cycle of growth and change: this is The Shift.
Prior to December 2012 there were changes occurring in many societies.  Here in the West the economy was readjusting; scientific research was able to access the quantum realm; the nature of both work and the household would be unrecognizable to my grandparents who were born only slightly more than a century ago. Travel and food and clothing and cooking and physical activity and emotional intelligence and spiritual practice have all been altered in the last ten and twenty and fifty years.
Ora Nadrich writes that the spiritual Shift, is, in a nutshell “oneness”: “[I]t's about the "quality or state of being one," and what that means is that we are all connected. You might be thinking, ... "Ah, so that's what The Beatles were saying in their song, 'I Am The Walrus' -- 'I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together.'"
As progeny of the 1900s adults today have seen the first pictures of Mother Planet from space. We have seen the Earth as an individual body with a single, moving water system and atmosphere.  We are predisposed to understanding the Power of One: the impact that an individual can have on larger systems. When I refuse to buy sweat-shop products, I reduce the exploitation of workers. When I boycott a product, I contribute to its removal from production.
Shifts in our attitudes and our villages and our nations fold back and feed into each other like the looping line of the figure 8.  As each Shift contributes to other Shifts, then the whole is moved.
As a level of higher consciousness is attained by sufficient individuals, chain reactions will elevate all of humanity to that level. Each and every one of us is in a time of progressive transition, and the way to ensure the best possible outcome is to commit to being present and active in every moment.
